Hugo Broos Makes Petersen Confirmation

 Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen would have been part of the latest national squad had he not been sidelined by injury during a critical phase of the season.

Broos, who has been closely monitoring player performances, revealed the initial squad list earlier this month, naming five goalkeepers: Ronwen Williams, Ricardo Goss, Sipho Chaine, Renaldo Leaner, and Darren Johnson. At that time, Petersen was already out with an injury, interrupting what had been a strong run of form.

The final squad, announced on Thursday, includes Williams, Goss, and Leaner as the three goalkeepers selected for the upcoming friendlies against Panama—important matches aimed at strengthening team unity and refining tactics ahead of more demanding fixtures. Prior to missing the last three games for Amakhosi due to injury, Petersen had delivered standout performances, recording 11 league clean sheets and solidifying his role as a central figure for his club. His consistent displays had drawn national attention, and Broos admitted that losing him was a notable setback.

“If Brandon hadn’t been injured, he would’ve been here… Yes,” Broos said, highlighting the value Petersen’s form and experience would have added during this crucial period. The inclusion of Sekhukhune United’s Leaner came as a surprise to some, particularly since Chaine leads the league with 14 clean sheets. Still, Broos explained his decision by expressing a desire to assess Leaner more closely: “Leaner, I want to see him with us. I want to see him in camp—not just his performance on the field, but also how he fits in off it. We’ll take it from there.”
