Orlando Pirates are in the midst of a significant summer overhaul as they prepare for potential player exits and look to bolster their defense. The recent acquisition of Oswin Appollis from Polokwane City has added fuel to the ongoing speculation about the future of young midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng. Interest from overseas clubs suggests his departure may be imminent.
The possibility of Mofokeng leaving Pirates has been a talking point since late last year, when Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos hinted that this season might be the midfielder’s last with the club. Echoing this sentiment, Mofokeng’s father, Sechaba, shared his hopes for an international move, saying, “My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I pray daily that he doesn’t play in the Betway Premiership again this season.”
Sechaba emphasized his son’s readiness to compete on a European stage, listing countries such as Spain, England, France, and the Netherlands as suitable destinations. However, he was clear that a transfer to Saudi Arabia would not be ideal at this point, stressing that experience and happiness in competitive leagues are more valuable than financial rewards.
In parallel, Orlando Pirates are locked in a transfer tug-of-war with Kaizer Chiefs over Neo Rapoo, a highly rated SuperSport full-back. Rapoo’s progress through youth ranks has earmarked him as one of South Africa’s most promising defenders, making his decision highly anticipated by both clubs.
Should Mofokeng move on and Rapoo join the squad, it would demonstrate Pirates’ strategy of blending young talent with experienced players to build a stronger future.
As the transfer window heats up, Orlando Pirates are at a crossroads. The likely exit of a rising star and the potential arrival of fresh talent highlight the club’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and reinforce. Supporters will be keen to see how these developments unfold ahead of the new season.
