Kaizer Chiefs have shown renewed interest in bringing South African international Khanyisa Mayo to Naturena, and this time they’ve reached out in a more personal way—by calling his father, Patrick Mayo. The Soweto giants are still looking for experienced attackers to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, and Mayo remains on their radar after missing out on him in 2023. Back then, Mayo made a last-minute switch to Algerian side CR Belouizdad just an hour before Chiefs contacted his agent.
Now, with Mayo performing consistently in North Africa—scoring six goals and providing one assist in 41 matches last season—the Chiefs have reignited their pursuit. His father, a former Kaizer Chiefs striker himself, confirmed that the club contacted him last week. He told the media that Chiefs were inquiring whether he would support his son’s potential move back to South Africa. Patrick Mayo said he welcomed the idea and that it would be a proud moment for him to see his son follow in his footsteps by joining the same club where he once played.
However, Patrick made it clear that if Chiefs are serious, they need to engage directly with Khanyisa’s current club, as his contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. He also made a special request to Chiefs regarding his son’s jersey number. He asked that Khanyisa be given jersey number 21—the same number he wore during his time at the club—instead of number 10.
