Sundowns & Chiefs Receive French Backing

Former PSL coach Romain Folz has thrown his support behind Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, insisting the two giants are more than capable of carrying South Africa’s CAF ambitions despite Orlando Pirates’ painful exit from continental competition.

With Pirates crashing out earlier than expected, concerns have grown about the country’s representation on the African stage. However, Folz believes the situation is far from bleak. The French tactician argues that both Sundowns and Chiefs possess the structure, experience and mentality needed to compete deep into CAF tournaments and restore pride for South African football.

Speaking from a tactical perspective, Folz pointed to Sundowns’ consistency in Africa over recent seasons as a major advantage. He highlighted their squad depth, tactical flexibility and growing maturity in managing high-pressure continental matches. According to Folz, Sundowns have learned how to win ugly when needed, a key trait for success away from home in Africa.

Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, earned praise for their evolution under the current technical setup. Folz noted that while Amakhosi are still a work in progress, their improved organisation and hunger could make them dangerous opponents. He suggested that Chiefs often raise their level in big matches, particularly when written off, and that this mentality could serve them well in CAF competition.

Folz also addressed Pirates’ exit, describing it as disappointing but not entirely surprising given the unpredictability of African tournaments. He stressed that continental football punishes small mistakes and that even strong squads can fall short if concentration drops at key moments.

Crucially, Folz believes the pressure now resting on Sundowns and Chiefs could actually work in their favour. With expectations clearer and the spotlight sharper, both clubs have an opportunity to unite South African supporters behind them and reassert the country’s status on the continent.

He added that success will depend on squad rotation, managing travel fatigue and maintaining domestic form alongside CAF commitments. In his view, Sundowns are better equipped in that regard, but Chiefs’ growing confidence should not be underestimated.

As the CAF campaign continues, South Africa’s hopes now rest on these two heavyweights. With experienced voices like Folz backing them, Sundowns and Chiefs will be eager to prove that the country still belongs among Africa’s elite.
