The South African Football Association (SAFA) is expected to appoint an arbitrator this week to resolve the ongoing transfer dispute involving Cape Town Spurs and Kaizer Chiefs over winger Asanele Velebayi.
The case stems from a recent ruling by the Premier Soccer League’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC), which declared Velebayi a free agent following Spurs’ relegation from the top division.
This allowed the player to leave the club without any transfer fee, a decision Spurs strongly oppose.
Spurs maintain that Velebayi remains under contract despite their relegation and argue that the DRC misinterpreted league regulations.
In response, the club filed an appeal with SAFA’s Arbitration Tribunal and paid the R35,000 fee to fast-track the process.
This isn’t the only contractual issue Spurs are dealing with.
The club is also concerned about Liam Bern, who is seeking free-agent status amid interest from AmaZulu.
Meanwhile, the dispute involving rising star Luke Baartman has been resolved, with the player officially signing for Kaizer Chiefs.
Spurs believe their contractual rights are being overlooked and are fighting to retain their players and uphold the integrity of their agreements.
The outcome of the arbitration could set a crucial precedent in South African football, particularly around how relegation impacts existing player contracts.
