Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jnr has revealed the club’s lofty ambitions for their two-week pre-season tour in the Netherlands, insisting it’s not just about fitness, but about transformation.
The Soweto giants touched down in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn earlier this week to begin preparations for the upcoming DStv Premiership season. However, the tour got off to a rocky start as Amakhosi suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to SBV Vitesse in their opening friendly on Tuesday evening.
Speaking to the club's official media team, Motaung Jnr emphasized the broader vision behind the European pre-season, which includes four more matches — the next being a stern test against Dutch Eredivisie side FC Utrecht on Friday at 16:00 (SA time).
The Chiefs boss stressed the importance of pushing players beyond their comfort zones, highlighting the value of playing abroad, constant travel to training matches, and adapting to unfamiliar conditions. According to Motaung, this approach will mentally and physically prepare the squad for what promises to be a demanding 2025/26 season.
Motaung also praised the club’s Chairman, Dr. Kaizer Motaung, and the Board for supporting the overseas tour initiative, stating it provides invaluable opportunities for team bonding, especially with newly signed players and rising youth talents.
"Going to Holland is not only something new for the youngsters but also for several of the older players. It’s about integrating the new signings and strengthening the unity in the squad," he added.
The Netherlands camp follows a growing trend among elite South African clubs looking to bridge the gap with global standards. Chiefs’ trip marks another chapter in their mission to return to the top of South African football after seasons of underperformance.
