In an effort to keep veteran striker Peter Shalulile on staff for at least another season, Mamelodi Sundowns are now in contract extension talks with him. Similar to what they did with Denis Onyango and Themba Zwane, the club is taking measures to keep Shalulile on the team because of their reputation for rewarding dependable and long-term players.
In the 2024–25 season, Shalulile scored 11 goals and added 2 assists in 47 appearances (mostly from the bench), despite seeing reduced playing time under new coach Miguel Cardoso. Even though he's 31 years old, the Namibian international is still an invaluable asset to the Brazilians, and his performances have solidified the case for a contract extension. Currently, talks are on to extend Shalulile's stay in Chloorkop until 2026 under a deal comparable to the one Zwane signed earlier this year.
Shalulile is on the verge of becoming Mamelodi Sundowns' all-time leading scorer, which adds an extra layer of symbolic importance to the renewal talks. If he were to break that record, it would confirm his place in the club's history and future endeavours while also cementing his legendary position. Even with players getting on in years, the club has always prioritised their long-term impact.
The fact that Onyango, who is now 40 years old, just got a one-year contract extension shows that the club values leadership and performance from its players. Both parties are hopeful that Shalulile's new contract will be finalised before pre-season training starts, giving the striker a chance to finally make his Sundowns' mark.
