With a place in the CAF Champions League final at stake, Mamelodi Sundowns are set for a high-stakes clash against Egyptian giants Al Ahly at Loftus Versfeld Stadium this Saturday at 3 pm.
The Tshwane-based outfit advanced to the semi-finals after a narrow 1–0 aggregate victory over Esperance de Tunis in the quarter-finals. Now, the Brazilians turn their full attention to continental glory, eager to return to the final for the first time since their historic 2016 triumph under Pitso Mosimane.
Current head coach Miguel Cardoso, who took over earlier this season, is under mounting pressure to deliver silverware after Sundowns’ shock 2-1 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals last weekend. That loss leaves only two trophies within reach: the DStv Premiership title and the CAF Champions League.
“This team is built for resilience,” said former captain Hlompho Kekana, who led Sundowns to their 2016 CAF title. “The beauty of playing at this level is that you don’t have time to dwell on losses. Saturday offers an immediate shot at redemption.”
Sundowns boast a formidable recent record against Al Ahly, having gone unbeaten in their last seven encounters. Yet, Cardoso and his squad know full well that past dominance offers no guarantees in knockout football.
“This is our sternest test yet,” said Cardoso in a recent press conference. “The players know what’s at stake. We need focus, execution, and belief.”
Sundowns’ midfield anchor Tebogo Mokoena and attacker Themba Zwane are expected to play pivotal roles, while the team’s defensive organisation will be key to keeping Al Ahly’s potent front line at bay.
