Malawian striker Gabadinho Mhango has revealed the heartbreaking story behind his failed move to Kaizer Chiefs, a club he grew up admiring. In a recent interview with iDiski Times, the 32-year-old opened up about how close he came to signing for the Soweto giants before things unexpectedly took a turn.
Mhango, who previously played for Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu FC, was reportedly on his way to Naturena after leaving Durban. With a deal seemingly imminent, he was full of excitement as he traveled from OR Tambo International Airport to the Kaizer Chiefs village. “I was close to Naturena to sign for the team and things just turned around. I was like wow!” he said. The experienced forward expressed how much the move meant to him, citing Kaizer Chiefs legend Bernard Parker as his inspiration. “The first time I went for the national team, Bernard Parker gave me a flag. Since then, it became a dream to play for Chiefs,” he recalled. “Even my family was calling, the whole country knew. I thought I was leaving tomorrow.”
But in a shocking twist, Mhango was turned away at the door, right before sealing the deal. The disappointment was profound. “Of course, I was sad because I wanted to work with them. I wanted to wear that kit,” he added. Despite the setback, Mhango remains hopeful. “Never give up, you are never late. Maybe one day will be one day,” he said. Now playing for Swallows FC, Mhango’s story serves as a reminder of how unpredictable football transfers can be — even when everything seems certain.
